The lesson from the loss of Prospect House is that the public have to act to stop unsympathetic extensions and modifications to buildings. Wigan had once listed Prospect House. It then allowed so many 20th centuary additions and modifications that the building lost it's 'Listed' status. Once that status was gone the UDP had only the recommendation that MBC ask the developer if he would like to change his plans. It's not surprising that he didn't want to change his planns and so the Historic Standish building was lost.
