Unfortunately the project is now on hold. We know the land is in public ownership from its compulsory purchase order. However none of the authorities likely to currently hold the deeds admit that they own the land! Someone is lying or has been so incompetent they have lost property deeds.
This project has now been launched as a Standish Forum Project. The aim is to create a small woodland showing all the types of trees with timber types associated with the village's past. Significant work went into researching the types of timber used and why they were used. These days where few people understand that timber types and their properties are far more diverse than available at'B+Q' . Many bodies have offered funding to put the woodland in place, including Wigan MBC. They see it as a unique educational resource as well as 'green lung'.
The Crow Orchard Rd. site is now on the edge of what the draft UDP is calling an area of air pollution. This is even more reason to push forward with this project. If you want more details please contact this Website or the Forum Website.

Woody Questions and Facts. (Please help by mailing any 'woody' local information you have to this website)
Did you know it is more important that the wood for a pit prop is straight grained than strong !
Why are barrels made of Oak? It has nothing to do with flavour, and everything to do with the watertightness of the wood! A Beech wood barrel would soon be empty!
Why were the best clogs made of Alder? It's simply lighter on the feet than any other wood. Alder also makes the best charcoal for the best blasting gunpowder!
What wood do you use for a pick handle? Ash, because it can stand the impacts without splitting. Though everyone thinks of oak as strong it would be useless as an axe handle!
Why were the best cart wheels made from three different types of wood? Ash for the rim for the reasons in the last question. Oak for the spokes because it splits easily and straight along the grain to make the spokes. If the spoke isn't straight its mot strong. Elm for the hub because you can chisel holes in from all directions without it splitting down the grain.
Why would sycamore have been used in the Bleechworks and in the butchers? The reason behind both of these applications is the same. This type of wood is particularly resistant to staining.
Cost has also been an issue. Horse chestnut was sometimes used as rollers in factories because it was about the most useless hardwood for anything else and therefore cheap.
