Where developments affect footpaths it is worth knowing who is responsible for what.

Footpaths

If a development seriously affects a footpath try notifying the Ramblers Association for help. Their protests are going to be heard louder than yours.

Another source of more detailed information is the Government Countryside Agency. who do free leaflets...

Managing rights of way: an agenda for action (CCP 273)
A guide to definitive map procedures (CCP 285)
A guide to procedures for public path orders (CCP 449)
Rights of Way Act : guidance notes for highway authorities (CCP 301)
Managing public access: a guide for farmers and landowners (CCP 450)

See contacts page for the
Countryside Agency.

Don't expect rapid adoption of new footpaths in Wigan. The Councils Statement of Priorities on this, indicates there was a 7 year waiting list in Aug'98 till..

2006

More worrying is that in the following 2 years, the list got 3 years 6 months longer. In short, they are failing to keep up with the job!

Wigan MBC footpaths issues contact was Mrs Paula Dunn, However between maternity leave,  holidays and now resignation  very little progress has been made this last year.  Cllr. Beswick ( Lib/Dem Aspul/Standish) is probably a more useful contact than the council. He is currently trying to get footpaths adopted by going over  the  heads of the council's department straight to the Government.
