Beechfield

Beechfield  The church site with no field and now no beech.
Once an orchard, finally put down as a brown field site by council planners!

This site is adjacent St. Marie's and more people would have known it as the derelict bungalow adjacent the church car park. The bungalow has been abandoned for many years now because of serious subsidence. In its garden was a magnificent beech tree.

It would seem that the first stage to development nowadays is to get anonymous contractors onto a plot and cut down anything likely to be a hurdle to planning permission. So with no apparent motive this was carried out and the beech was felled. Objections were made to the council but nothing came of it.

Next the planning notices went up as required but were quickly torn down. Churchgoers who one might think have some right to know that their car park is to become a housing access road for seven detached learnt nothing from the church.

Then the planning notice appeared in the paper. Small, plain print,

Dobcrest Homes Ltd.  Dobcrest House, Lowe Mill Lane, Hindley, have applied to erect seven detached dwelling houses with associated garages and layout access thereto, following demolition of existing bungalow.  At location of development, Beechfield, Almond Brook Road, Standish.

Not a mention of where it is to those who don't know what the house was called 30 years ago! Not a mention of the church solicitors named on the plan's in the council offices.

After 8 months, Dorbcrest and the Church ware allowed 5 houses given the very poor means of access. This has not stopped them trying to buy up more land and apply to extend the site.

A huge beech tree felled prior to planning application to make the developers job easier?
